The 2017 Mazda MX-5 (Miata) RF (Retractable Fastback/Targa)
Weird nomenclature aside, Mazda pulled a Gwen Stefani by making their latest incarnation of their 2016 selves even prettier yet more functional. Say what??? Amazingly, Mazda’s flagship vehicle pulls off the hardtop party trick without reducing trunk space. The car will probably take a power-to-weight ratio hit on account of all the mechanicals, but who cares?! You get an origami roof along with the MX-5’s legendary handling.
Ample North Americans get the 2.0L SkyActive 4-banger engine, while dainty Europeans and Asians have the option of the 1.5L. Mazda also debuted this new Machine Grey paint, which reminds me of the raucous RX-7 Spirit R. One minute change I noticed is the windshield A-pillar is no longer blacked out, and the shape of the trunk is different because of the buttresses for the folding roof. Overall, Mazda is keeping the old mantra alive – “Miata Is Always The Answer”. The MX-5 RF looks like the new Jag F-Type, folds like a Porsche 911 Targa, is as reliable as a Lexus, but only costs as much as a Toyota. Most definitely lust-worthy.
